Fullmetal Alchemist - Prologue

A lesson without pain is meaningless.

“Al! Alphonse!”

Lights and shadows flicker together against cold stone walls in a terrible dance, flashing around a young boy on his hands and knees; blond hair clinging to his tearstained face, teeth clenched, palms pressed to a fading chalked diagram on the floor...

“Damn it!” he shouts, his voice hoarse and desperate. “Alphonse! Stay with me!”

He inches forward in a helpless, limping crawl, choking on pain and smoke and sizzling air…

One cannot gain anything without sacrificing something in return.

“Mom…someone…oh god...” The boy sobs out unintelligible words, cursing, praying, pleading, unaware that he is crying out to someone he doesn’t believe in. “N-no...god, no...they took him! How did this happen...it shouldn't h-have..."

The words melt into a scream as he reaches back with a trembling hand and feels the bloody stump where his left leg used to be.

No one answers the cries, for there is no one left to hear them.
Okay, I know some of you are either wondering "What the heck is Project FMA?", "I already know this part! Why's it called a 'sneak peek', and why'd I waste my time reading it?" or maybe even "What the heck is Fullmetal Alchemist??"

Project FMA is a collaborative effort by some of us on fullmetal-alchemist.com to "novelize" the original Fullmetal Alchemist manga...in other words, taking the manga story and adapting it into a normal novel. Because, let's face it - it's an epic story, and it would make an AWESOME scifi novel. :D

It wouldn't be officially published, of course, and we wouldn't be selling it at all; it would just be posted online where people could read and enjoy it. What you just saw here is the Prologue for the "novel". And yes, I wrote it. :D But I didn't make the signature banner; that lovely thing was made by Aribelle, the wonderful gal who first got this project going. :)

Now here's where YOU come in - this project is still pretty small, and we need more people to pitch in. SO, if you consider yourself an ace in writing, or if you're good at proofreading and editing - and you like the sound of this project - please go here: [link]

Introduce yourself and let us know what you'd like to help out with! We could use all the help we can get! =) Or, if you haven't read the original manga and simply feel interested in following the novelization, that's great too! What the point of writing it if no one's gonna read it? ;p

I personally think this project is a great idea, because I LOVE the FMA manga and I'd love to introduce my family to it...but they don't like reading comic books or mangas. We're more of the bookworm type. So I think this is the perfect way to get them into the awesome, original story, as well as others like them. What do you think? :)

And if you liked this, I might post up a bigger sneak peek sometime later. We'll see how things turn out. In the mean time, check out the link and spread the word around! :D

Hrm, I've just come across this, and though I seem to be pretty late, is it still going on? Of course, nothing can top the manga, but I've often wanted to read FMA as a novel, just because I thought it would turn out absolutely gorgeous. I would be glad to offer my writing skills (however small they are xD), so if it's still going on, let me know. :D

Awesome prologue, BTW.
